Target Audience: Psychologists and other mental health professionals.

In this intermediate and experiential 3-day workshop, facilitators Sonya Lott, Ph.D. and Mike Likier, Ph.D. will provide an overview of multicultural competence, using the APA’s Multicultural Guidelines: An Ecological Approach to Context, Identity, and Intersectionality, 2017. These guidelines call upon mental health professionals to deepen their awareness of self and others based on the intersectionality of reference group identities (age, sex, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, SES, gender identity, ability status, religion, spirituality, immigration status, and more) and contextual influences such as families, institutions, and society-at-large. Emphasis will be placed on the influence of power, privilege, and marginalization on individuals and groups.

Participants will learn ways to cultivate mindfulness and cultural humility as they explore their own worldviews shaped by their reference group identities and their experiences of power, privilege, and marginalization. The impact of their worldviews on their overall well-being as well as the students, clients, and research participants they serv, will be also be explored.

On Day 3 of the workshop, facilitators will guide participants in creating a unique plan for their continued expansion of multicultural competence, based on several self-assessments offered during the workshop.

Workshop Objectives

At the end of the 3-day workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to practice mindfulness and cultural humility while analyzing their own processes related to multicultural competence, and while offering feedback to, and receiving feedback from facilitators and other participants.
  2. Describe 4 ways in which to manage the challenges of maintaining cultural humility and mindfulness in work with clients, students, research participants, and others they serve.
  3. Discuss the importance of multicultural competence in adherence to ethical principles and code of conduct for mental health professionals.
  4. Describe the ambiguity that exists in the definitions of socially constructed identities (e.g. sexual orientation, race, gender identity, ethnicity).
  5. Explain how social identities are self-defined, fluid, and complex.
  6. Explain the concept of intersectionality and its influences on reference group identities of clients, students, research participants, and others they serve.
  7. Describe the major theories of racial, ethnic, and other cultural identity development.
  8. Describe the impact of the various ecological contexts (i.e., families, schools, and institutions) on reference group identities.
  9. Explain how institutions and laws perpetuate the existence of power, privilege, and marginalization.
  10. Describe the impact of power, privilege, and marginalization on the physical, cognitive, psychological, and spiritual well-being on others.
  11. Assess their own stage/level of racial, ethnic and other culturally relevant identity development.
  12. Describe the impact of the various ecological contexts (i.e., families, schools, and institutions) on their own reference group identities.
  13. Analyze the influence of intersectionality on their own reference group identities.
  14. Analyze the impact power, privilege, and marginalization has had on their own physical, cognitive, psychological, and spiritual well-being.
  15. List strengths and challenges in their current level of multicultural competence.
  16. Create an individualized plan for the continued expansion of their multicultural competence, based on the application of knowledge gained in the workshop and guided self-assessments.

The 18 CEs are for full attendance on all three days of the workshop. Within 3 days after the completion of the workshop, participants who attended all three days for the workshop for the full 18 hours will receive via email a URL for the completion of the workshop evaluation. Within three days after completion of the evaluation, your certificate of attendance will be emailed to you.
