The Power of These Now Moments

Continuing Education Live Webinar Series

Recent events in the United States have precipitated an awakening or deepened awareness of the ongoing injustices that exist based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, SES, gender, and national origin that have propelled us into a collective “now” moment, a sustained point of crisis that has the significant potential to result in a major culture shift.

This awareness during this pivotal time in history has also increased our awareness of privilege and/or marginalization based on our own cultural identities. Depending on where find ourselves in that paradigm, we may be experiencing a range of emotions including rage, shame, frustration, fear, and/or guilt.

It is challenging to stay present to the awareness that we are experiencing, but we cannot change what we are not aware of. Staying in this awareness allows us to honor our ethical responsibility of being aware and respectful of cultural differences between ourselves and those we serve and ensuring that our own biases and prejudices-and to the best of our ability those of others-do not negatively impact those we serve.

As mental health professionals we have power to be the change that we wish to see. But many of us in this moment are unaware of how best to do this. Our multicultural guidelines that serve as a road map, encourage us to advocate for social justice with and on behalf of our clients at the individual, community, institutional, public policy, and international/global levels.

The live webinars in this Power of These Now Moments series are intended as an invitation to all mental health professionals-of all cultural identities-to lean into the journey of multicultural competence on a deeper level, with collegial support and decades of  relevant theory and research available as our foundation.
